How to Find and Land a Remote IT Job

Updated 6 October 2026 · 6 min read

“Remote” can mean very different things: fully remote anywhere in the world, remote within one country, or two days a week from home. Understanding those differences — and showing that you can work independently — makes your remote job search much more efficient.

Read the fine print of “remote”

Many remote roles are limited to candidates who live in a specific country or time zone, usually for tax, employment-law or collaboration reasons. Check the job ad for phrases like “remote (UK only)”, “within CET ± 2 hours” or “hybrid, two office days per month”. Applying only to roles you are actually eligible for saves time on both sides.

  • Fully remote — work from anywhere the company can legally employ you
  • Remote within a country or region — you must live there
  • Hybrid — regular office days, often a fixed number per week or month
  • Remote-friendly — remote is possible, but the team is mostly in an office

Show that you work well remotely

Remote employers worry about communication and self-management more than about skills alone. Give evidence on your CV and in interviews: written documentation you produced, projects you delivered across time zones, open-source contributions, or experience with asynchronous tools like pull-request reviews and written design docs.

Your written communication is part of the interview

In remote hiring, your emails and messages are effectively work samples. Reply clearly, structure longer messages with short paragraphs, and confirm next steps in writing. A concise, well-written cover note often matters more for remote roles than for office jobs.

Set up a professional remote environment

For video interviews, use a stable internet connection, a headset and a quiet room. Test your camera and screen sharing beforehand — many technical interviews include live coding over a shared screen.

Be realistic about competition and salary

Fully remote roles attract applicants from much wider areas, so competition is higher. Tailoring your application matters even more. Salaries for remote roles are often tied to the country you live in rather than the company's headquarters; ask about the salary approach early so there are no surprises late in the process.
